Uganda’s wait for a first Boxing medal at the Olympics will go on for another four years!
This was confirmed on Tuesday morning after Bombers captain Shadir Musa Bwogi lost his round of 16 welterweight bout to Georgia’s Eskarhan Madiev.
Bwogi who received a bye at the round of 32 could not hold off Mediav, especially in the last two rounds, to lose the fight by split decision.
The five judges’ score-cards read 29-27, 28-28, 26-30, 26-30 and 26-30 in favour of the Georgian.
Bwogi was Uganda’s last boxing-hope after Catherine Nanziri and David Ssemujju had lost their bouts on Sunday and Monday respectively.
Uganda was seeking for a first boxing medal since John Mugabi won Silver at the Moscow games in 1980.
Overall, Uganda has won just seven medals at the Olympics with the last one coming in 2012 when Stephen Kiprotich won Gold in the Marathon.
Uganda now has only 22 athletes, left standing with the best bet for a medal sitting on long-distance runners’ shoulders.
